On this episode of TFBTV, Miles Vining takes a look at how the U.S. Marine Corps goes about the annual rifle qualification process that every Marine undertakes every year. Qualification is not only important for keeping up the fundamentals of marksmanship, but also plays into a Marine's cutting score, or a number that is calculated, and puts them in the zone to be promoted. It isn't sexy CQB training, but these are the building blocks that marksmanship comes from, and allows Marines to be accurate and successful in combat. Michael Volkin: In Basic training you're going to do a lot of marching and facing movements. Let's review some of the most common facing movements here. Let's start with the position of attention. To come to attention: bring the heels together and ensure the feet are at a forty five degree angle, keep the legs straight; without locking the knees. And the body is erect with the chest lifted, back arched and shoulders square and even. Arms hang straight down along the body without stiffness. Wrists are straight with the forearms, place thumbs which are resting along the first joint of the forefinger, along the seams of the trousers. Hands are cupped but not clinched as a fist, with palms facing away. The weight of the body rests equally on the heels and balls of both feet. Silence and immobility are required. Let's move on to two common facing movements. Left face and right face. Most drill commands have two parts: The preparatory command and the command of execution. The preparatory command states the movement to be carried out and mentally prepares the recruit for it's execution. On the command 'left face', the preparatory command is 'left'. The command of execution tells us when the movement is to be carried out. In left face the command of execution is 'face'. The facing movement 'left face' is always given from the position of attention, and directs the recruit towards the left ninety degrees. The facing movement 'right face', is always given from the position of attention and directs the recruit to the right ninety degrees. A more complicated but common facing movement is the movement 'about face'. The command is 'about face'. Where 'about' is a preparatory command and 'face' is a command of execution. On the command of execution 'face', move the toe of the right foot to a point touching the marching surface, about half the length of the foot to the rear and slightly to the left of the left heel, rest most of the weight on the body of the heel of the left foot. And allow the right knee to bend naturally. Next turn to the right one hundred eighty degrees and the left heel on the ball of the right foot. Resuming the position of attention. The arms should remain at your sides as in the position of attention throughout this movement. This movement is difficult to do at first so practice a couple dozen times before leaving for basic training.

Public domain film from the National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). Split with MKVmerge GUI (part of MKVToolNix), the same software can recombine the downloaded parts (in mp4 format): http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/doc/mkvmerge-gui.html part 2: http://youtu.be/Az0qJa2bDZI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marksman A marksman is a person who is skilled in precision, or a sharpshooter shooting, using projectile weapons, such as with a rifle but most commonly with a designated marksman rifle and/or a sniper rifle, to shoot at long range targets. The main difference between a marksman and a normal sniper is that a marksman is usually considered an organic part of a team of soldiers, whereas regular snipers tend to work alone or with other snipers. In the military, marksmen are sometimes attached to an infantry squad where they take accurate long-range shots at valuable targets as needed, thus extending the reach of the squad. Another term for a marksman is a sharpshooter, which was used in the early 19th Century. It is derived from the German word Scharfschütze... The terms 'marksman' and 'sharpshooter' are often used interchangeably with the term 'sniper' (as often in history) within paramilitary counter-terrorism teams such as SWAT, since only a select few use long-range sniper rifles while the majority are armed with close quarter combat submachine guns... In the United States Army and Marine Corps, the marksmanship of the soldiers are ranked based on their skill: marksman-sharpshooter-expert. Holders of each level wear qualification badges below their ribbons with bars for the weapons they qualify in. In the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard, full-sized medals are only issued at the expert level. Both services award separate medals for pistol and rifle proficiency. The United States Air Force gives just a ribbon for qualifying at the expert level, although a bronze star can be earned if the wearer qualifies on both of these types of small arms. This sequence comes from organized, competitive shooting where it was first created. Some civilian shooting organizations still use the same terms for classification purposes. However, the terms are not consistent between the military and civilians. Within the United States military, a marksman in the U.S. Army is referred to as "Squad Designated Marksman" (SDM), and a marksman in the Marines is called a "Designated Marksman" (DM)...

Here we have an in-depth look at how this training takes place in the United States. Many THANKS to: Ventura Munitions: http://bit.ly/1LKxNRP Please Support Them! This is a video in 4K about the Annual Marine Corps Rifle Range qualification. I recently shot expert on the range and recorded and edited this video to give anyone who was curious some insight on what it is like and what the process is like. I really hope you enjoy this video and watch it to its completion. I really put a lot of effort into this and i hope you enjoy it. Make sure you watch in 4k! "Phase 2: Snap in/grass week During snap-in week, you're primarily in a classroom setting where you learn the four standard Marine Corps firing positions (standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone). This phase of your training isn't conducted by a drill instructor, but rather by a Marine who holds the MOS (job) of a Primary MarksmanshipInstructor (PMI). The PMI teaches you how to adjust your sights, how to adjust for weather conditions, and how to successfully hit what you're aiming at. During this phase of training, you actually get to fire a computerized version of your weapon, which will give you a good indication of how you'll do when youactually visit the firing range. Phase 3: Firing week During firing week, you actually get to fire your weapon for the first time. The week begins with practice on the firing range. Half of your platoon will firethe weapon, while the other half sets up targets. Then you swap. The course of fire includes shooting at targets that are 200, 300, and 500 yards away from the prone, sitting, kneeling, and standing positions. It's interesting to note that the Marine Corps is the only branch that has recruits shooting from distances as far as 500 yards away. At the end of the week, you get a chance to fire on the actual qualification course. The course is the same as the one you used in practice, but this time, it counts. If you fail to qualify, you won't proceed in basic training with the rest of your platoon. You'll be sent back to complete rifle instruction all overagain, thereby delaying your graduation date. In order to qualify, you fire a total of 50 rounds, worth up to 5 points each (depending on where you hit the target). The maximum possible points you can earn on this course is 250. To pass the course, you must earn at least 190 points, which will qualify you to wear the Marine Corps marksmanship badge. To become a sharpshooter, you must earn at least 210 points. In order to win status as an Expert, you must receive a score of at least 220 points."

What is it like being a USMC Rifleman: Life in the Marines This took place back in December 2016 during a training evolution at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center 29 Palms. Behind the scenes: This was the last day of a two week field op, and everyone was ready to go home. We spent one whole night digging our foxhole for the battalion defense. After yet another grueling night trying to make it through the harsh desert conditions we awoke to the sound of Amtrak's racing to positions across our battalion (1000+ Marines). If you'd like to see more, I have over an hour of footage from this day and others that I'd love to share with all you! Just let me know what you all want to see and hear. Commentary is an option. Ever wonder how Marines are made? Take a brief look into 12 weeks of intensive and frantic recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. United States Marine Corps Recruit Training (commonly known as "boot camp") is an initial training that each recruit must successfully complete in order to serve in the United States Marine Corps. Week 1 Recruits arrive late at night and are immediately thrust into the whirlwind of in-processing, haircuts, uniform and gear issue and medical evaluations. Recruits undergo an initial strength test to ensure they are prepared for training. Week 2 During week two, recruits meet their team of drill instructors for the first time, learn Marine Corps Core Values and are introduced to the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. Week 3 During week 3, the recruits continue MCMAP training and negotiate the Bayonet Assault Course and Obstacle Course. Week 4 During week 4, the recruits continue MCMAP training, tackle an initial Combat Fitness Test and face the senior drill instructor inspection. Week 5 Week 5 serves as the final week of Phase I, which is when recruits participate in swim qualifications and conduct an initial Physical Fitness Test. Week 6 Grass Week. Recruits hike to the rifle range and begin to learn the fundamentals of Marine Corps marksmanship. Recruits learn the proper firing positions and spend hours sitting in grass fields sighting in on practice targets. Week 7 Firing Week. Recruits take what they learned from Grass Week and apply it downrange. Week 8 During field week, recruits put their combat mindset to the test, day and night. Week 9 During week 9, recruits are put on working parties around the depot, experience what it is like to patrol areas at night and undergo a series commander's inspection. Week 10 During week 10 of recruit training, recruits complete the Bayonet Assault Course, Pugil Sticks III and the Combat Fitness Test. Week 11 During week 11 of training, recruits completed their final drill evaluation, final physical fitness test, and conquered the rappel tower. Week 12 Recruits take on The Crucible. After completing 12 grueling weeks of transformation, recruits have earned the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, and can now finally be called United States Marines.
